Almagel A is one of the most common and widely known antacid drugs. Such drugs can eliminate the manifestations of gastritis, duodenitis, ulcers and esophagitis. Among other things, the drug has analgesic properties, relieving soreness and heartburn in the stomach. It is used to relieve severe pain that occurs against the background of pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract of various origins.
The instructions for use with Almagel A indicate that the drug is not absorbed by the intestinal walls. Provided that the prescribed dosage regimen and the required dosage are strictly followed, the drug is practically not absorbed in the organs of the gastrointestinal tract. The medication produces a long and uniform effect, while not introducing an imbalance in the composition of electrolytes and avoiding the likelihood of alkalosis or other metabolic disorders.
The drug does not irritate the urinary system, and with prolonged use does not provoke the occurrence of alkalosis and the formation of calculi in the urinary tract.
The suspension is a white substance, opaque, with a characteristic lemon smell. Before use, shake the vial with the drug to restore the homogeneity of the suspension.
According to the instructions to Almagel A, the main active components of the drug are aluminum and magnesium hydroxide, as well as benzocaine. It also contains a number of auxiliary substances, such as sodium saccharin, lemon oil, purified water, ethanol, sorbitol, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, hydroxyethyl cellulose, butyl parahydroxybenzoate, methyl parahydroxybenzoate.
Indications for the use of Almagel A are the following conditions and diseases:
- An ulcer of the duodenum or stomach in the acute stage.
- Gastritis in a chronic or acute form of the course, which is characterized by an increased or normal secretory function in the acute stage.
- Reflux esophagitis.
- Hernia of the diaphragm of the esophagus.
- Functional bowel disorders.
- Prevention in the treatment of corticosteroids and NSAIDs.
- Soreness and discomfort against the background of epigastrium due to improper nutrition, as well as smoking, alcohol and coffee abuse.

According to the instructions for use, Almagel A is contraindicated in patients with the following conditions:
- Hypersensitivity to the drug.
- Severe renal dysfunction.
- The age of the child is up to one month.
- Alzheimer's disease.
The drug is not recommended to be prescribed simultaneously with sulfanilamides, since benzocaine is present in its composition.
Instructions for use
"Almagel A" is prescribed by the doctor in dosages, taking into account the nature of the disease and its course. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, one to three teaspoons of the drug is prescribed. Take the drug 3-4 times a day, about half an hour before a meal and immediately before going to bed.
The use of Almagel should be very careful.
For children, the drug is prescribed with the permission of the attending physician. Up to ten years, a third of the standard dosage is prescribed, up to 15 years, half the usual dose is given. If the pathology is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, pain in the abdomen, then therapy should be started with "Almagel A", and after removing the exacerbation, you can switch to the usual "Almagel". The bottle before using the suspension must be thoroughly shaken off and achieve homogeneity of the drug.
This is confirmed by the "Almagel A" instructions for use.
Adverse reactions indicate an excess of the required dosage of the drug. They can manifest in the form of nausea and vomiting, disturbances in taste, constipation, stomach cramps and soreness in the epigastric region. These side effects disappear on their own after switching to a lower dosage and do not require specific treatment.
What else does the instructions for use with the yellow Almagel A tell us?
If the prescribed dosage is exceeded, drowsiness may also occur. With prolonged use of the drug, phosphorus deficiency, resorption and excretion of calcium in the urine may occur. For this reason, it is necessary during treatment to ensure the supply of phosphorus in sufficient quantities with food. In renal failure, side effects such as dementia, swelling of the extremities and hypermagnesemia are possible.
It is not recommended to take Almagel A for longer than three days during pregnancy. During lactation, the use of the drug should be discarded. In childhood, the dosage should be calculated only by a specialist. This will help to avoid unwanted reactions to the drug from the child's body. This is also described in the instructions for use with Almagel A.
Features of the drug
The drug is dispensed in pharmacies without a prescription from a doctor. Its cost varies depending on the region and the pricing policy of a particular pharmacy. It is produced immediately by several pharmaceutical companies, which also affects the price of the drug. The quality of the suspension in this case does not have significant differences between different manufacturers. How to take "Almagel A" correctly?
The tool can reduce the effectiveness of tetracycline drugs, H2-histamine receptor blockers, glycosides, ketoconazole, beta-blockers, iron salts, ciprofloxacin, indomethacin, phenothiazines, isoniazid, etc. If these drugs are prescribed at the same time, then at least a couple of hours should pass between their intake.
According to the instructions, "Almagel A" can not be taken simultaneously with sulfonamides. The main difference between a yellow drug and a green one is its analgesic effect. While a conventional drug without the “A” marking can only relieve heartburn.
It is not recommended to take the drug in a dosage that exceeds 16 tablespoons per day. If such a volume of the drug still needs to be prescribed, then the duration of the course of administration should not be more than two weeks.
How to take Almagel, it is better to check with your doctor.
The drug is produced over a rather long period of time, because there are many reviews about it on the Internet. The vast majority of comments on the use of the drug are positive. The best assessment is given to the high efficiency and duration of action of this drug.
The most effective drug is in relation to heartburn and a feeling of heaviness in the stomach. It is under these conditions that, according to reviews, it is most often used. The drug is not only taken for gastritis or an ulcer. Quite often, it is used to eliminate discomfort and pain in the epigastric region, which occur against the background of malnutrition, smoking and coffee abuse. Quite often, he is perceived as an assistant, not only against the background of gastritis, but also in his absence.
Like any other drug, Almagel A also has negative reviews. Some comments describe the lack of a therapeutic effect from taking the drug. Other reviews criticize the duration of the action. Many are unhappy that the drug only relieves symptoms for a while, but does not cure the very cause of their appearance. That is, it helps to relieve the soreness and heartburn that accompany gastritis, ulcers, esophagitis and duodenitis, without permanently eliminating the pathology.
In defense of the drug, it should be said that Almagel A is not intended for treatment, neither the instruction nor the specialists give such promises when it is prescribed. The drug only helps to normalize the human condition. In order to cure the root cause of unpleasant symptoms, it alone will not be enough, an integrated approach to solving this issue, namely the appointment of several drugs, is needed.
We reviewed the instructions for use with the yellow "Almagel A".
1 Difference and similarities of drugs
The drug Almagel is a sweet suspension with a lemon smell. Sold in 170 ml vials and sachets. You can buy medicine in the form of dragees. The same goes for another drug, but it has an orange flavor. In addition, there are differences in packaging: the first is green, the second is orange. There is a third type of drug - Almagel A. He has a yellow box.
Almagel and Almagel Neo are drugs from the antacid group.
There are slight differences in the composition of the drugs, which affects the healing properties. This concerns the difference in the ratio of magnesium hydroxide and aluminum. Because of this, there are differences in the indications for use, but insignificant.
An additional component is present in the Almagel Neo preparation, due to which it is also used for flatulence. The rest of the drugs are similar.
The effectiveness of medicines depends on their composition. There are some differences in the preparations. Both products contain aluminum and magnesium hydroxides, but their ratio is different. Almagel has 1.5: 1, and Neo has 1: 1. Thus, in 5 ml of the standard preparation contains 218 and 350 mg of active substances, and in Neo - 350 and 350 mg, respectively.
Almagel Neo includes as another active ingredient simethicone - 36 mg per 5 ml. It reduces the rate of gas formation.
Suspensions of drugs have a combined effect, which is aimed at lowering the level of acidity of the gastric contents. Medicines provide protection to the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines due to enveloping properties.
Almagel Neo further reduces the intensity of the process of gas formation in the digestive tract. The substance simethicone binds gas bubbles, removes cramps due to flatulence, helps to get rid of heartburn, frequent burping. Due to the presence of magnesium, the product has an additional mild laxative effect, improves bowel function, cleanses it. As for Almagel, due to the higher concentration of aluminum it has an astringent effect.
Almagel and Almagel Neo drugs provide protection to the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines due to enveloping properties.
The therapeutic effect occurs 3-4 minutes after taking the funds. The duration of the effect depends on how quickly the stomach empties. If you take the medicine on an empty stomach, then the effect lasts no more than an hour. If you do this after eating, then about 3 hours. Both drugs do not provoke secondary hypersecretion of gastric juice.
Indications for use
Both medicines are supposed to be taken in the following cases:
- acute and chronic form of gastritis with a normal or high level of acidity of the stomach,
- peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum during exacerbation of the disease,
- esophagitis, duodenitis,
- food poisoning,
- prevention of diseases of the digestive tract,
- to protect the gastric mucosa while taking non-steroidal drugs with anti-inflammatory properties.
Indications for use of both types of drugs are similar, although there is a slight difference.
Green Almagel is prescribed for indigestion. This is the best option for heartburn. The medicine will not only alleviate discomfort if a person eats improperly, but also protects against the negative effects of harmful factors.
Orange Almagel Neo is additionally prescribed for flatulence (bloating). The drug effectively fights rotting and fermentation in the intestines.
Almagel A and Almagel Neo: what is the difference?
Currently, several varieties of the drug are available. The main ingredients of the drug are the gel of algedrate and magnesium hydroxide (AMH).
Almagel A additionally contains a strong anesthetic benzocaine for the relief of gastralgia. The composition of Almagel Neo includes a component simethicone, which prevents excessive gas formation. As auxiliary components, distilled water, sweeteners and flavorings (lemon or orange) are used.
The product with a simple “basic” composition is supplied in green packages, the modified type “A” in yellow, and “Neo” in red.
Antacid is sold in bottles of polymer material, a volume of 170 ml. Annotation and a plastic measuring spoon (5 ml) are enclosed in the box. Almagel Neo is also packaged in 10 ml sachets.
What is Almagel taken from?
Combined drugs are prescribed for the following pathologies:
Type Neo is prescribed for a tendency to increased gas formation, and type A for gastralgia.
It is advisable to drink the drug with the appearance of stomach pain after smoking, consumption of coffee and alcohol, as well as while taking certain pharmacological agents and usual overeating.
As a preventive measure, antacid should be taken in the treatment of corticosteroid hormones (prednisone) and NSAIDs (acetylsalicylic acid, indomethacin, diclofenac, etc.), since these drugs help to reduce the pH of gastric juice.
Almagel A is often included in the standard treatment regimen for diabetes.
If inflammation of the upper gastrointestinal tract is accompanied by vomiting, nausea and gastralgia, it is recommended to start therapy with a medication labeled “A”. After stopping the acute symptoms, you can go to the base suspension.
Types of Almagel
This is an antacid drug that neutralizes the acidity of gastric juice and suppresses its excessive proteolytic activity. There are several types of Almagel, and how they differ from each other, you need to understand. Let's start with the external differences:
- Almagel - in green packaging,
- Almagel A - in yellow packaging,
- Almagel Neo - in orange packaging.
All preparations are available in the form of a thick white suspension in a plastic bottle with a volume of 170 ml., Sold in cardboard packaging. Instructions for use are attached. Only Almagel Neo goes on sale in the form of 10 ml sachets packed in a box of 10 or 20 pcs. Almagel is also in the form of tablets, as a suspension replacement. Sold in packs of 12 and 24 pcs.
Composition and action
The composition of the drug includes the active substance and auxiliary components. It is the active ingredients that determine the therapeutic effect of all forms of Almagel.
The qualitative composition of the suspension: gel aluminum hydroxide (algeldrate) and magnesium hydroxide paste. Both components have an absorbent effect. They absorb substances that adversely affect the mucous membrane of the stomach and intestines. Another therapeutic effect of these components is the enveloping effect. A powerful protective barrier is created on the surface of the walls of the stomach, contributing to an even distribution of the drug. Such a protective layer provides a long-term action of the active components.
Aluminum and magnesium hydroxide have a neutralizing effect on hydrochloric acid in the lumen of the stomach, resulting in the formation of aluminum and magnesium chloride. Subsequently, passing through the intestines, they are modified into alkaline salts. The proteolytic activity of pepsin decreases, and the medium becomes less aggressive. So the antacid effect of the drug is manifested. The ability to digest hydrochloric acid is reduced and, accordingly, its adverse effect on the walls of the gastric tract is reduced. Accelerated healing of erosive and ulcerative lesions occurs, due to the elimination of negative factors. Another advantage is the absence of such a phenomenon as “acid rebound”.
All aluminum compounds, including algeldrat, are characterized by a fixing effect. Magnesium hydroxide, on the contrary, appears as an osmotic laxative, increasing the amount of water in the feces, accelerating their passage through the intestines. Sorbitol increases the secretion of bile, which has a laxative effect. Thus, these 2 substances complement each other, eliminating unpleasant consequences and causing normal stool.
The only difference between Almagel A and the base suspension is that more benzocaine is added to the main components. It is a local anesthetic.
Thanks to this substance, the patient has a pronounced and rapid analgesic effect. Benzocaine, getting into the gastrointestinal tract, blocks the conduction of nerve impulses, so the pain and discomfort disappear.
It should be remembered that the timing of the use of this type of medicine is limited due to the side effects inherent in painkillers.
This view differs from the usual one in that it contains an additional component of simethicone. This element belongs to the group of carminative drugs, and by its chemical structure it is an organosilicon compound.
Simethicone reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles in the digestive system, stimulating their early destruction and complicating further formation. Further, the released gases are absorbed into the intestinal wall and are excreted by peristalsis. This type of suspension acts gently and delicately, eliminating dyspeptic disorders.
Mode of application
Almagel is in the form of suspension and tablets. Before applying the suspension, it is necessary to shake the contents of the vial so that it acquires a homogeneous composition.
The necessary dosage of the drug is determined by the gastroenterologist, depending on the age of the patient and the severity of the disease itself. Adults are prescribed from 5 to 10 ml. a single dose of the drug three times a day. Twice before meals for 30 minutes, and the last part is drunk before bedtime. If after some time the patient does not improve, the dosage increases. The maximum allowable amount per day should not exceed 80 ml. (16 scoops).
Use by adults
Almagel suspension begins to act within 5 minutes, and the therapeutic effect lasts up to 2 hours. The liquid can be drunk only 30 minutes after taking antacid. If, in addition to this medication, you also drink other medications, it is recommended that you observe an interval between doses of at least one hour. During treatment, it is undesirable to drink antibiotics, antihistamines and heart medications.
Almagel A is taken in the same way as the classic Almagel in green packaging. The following indications are indicated in the instructions: exacerbation of a stomach ulcer and duodenal ulcer, enteritis, duodenitis, exacerbation of acute and chronic gastritis, diaphragm hernia, acid reflux, colitis, indigestion, epigastric pain with malnutrition, diabetes. If you have severe, sharp pains, nausea and vomiting, then a suspension with an anesthetic is better for therapy.
Almagel Neo is prescribed an hour after a meal in a dosage of 5 ml. - this is the whole difference between this drug and others from the Almagel series. You can drink up to 60 ml per day. It differs from other preparations in orange flavor. Allowed to children only from 10 years old in the amount of 5 ml. at one time.
The medicine is produced in the form of a suspension - gel, which ensures its rapid and uniform distribution throughout the digestive system. Antacid begins to act gently, creating reliable protection and not leading to a sharp decrease in acidity, so problems with the digestion of food are excluded.
If the drug is taken for a long time, phosphorus deficiency may occur, because it is able to remove it from the body. Therefore, the lack of phosphorus must be replenished with special preparations, or a balanced diet.
Almagel Neo contains alcohol. For this reason, it should be taken with caution in people who have impaired liver function, have alcohol dependence, and suffer from epilepsy. The presence of alcohol does not affect the concentration of attention and reaction rate. It is prescribed even to patients whose activity determines perseverance and attentiveness.
Patients with fructose intolerance should not be treated with this medicine, as it contains sorbitol. It can provoke mucosal irritation and diarrhea in this category of people.
Side effects occur in isolated cases if the doctor's instructions are not followed. Typically, these are:
- allergic manifestations
- nausea and vomiting,
- change in taste
- pains and cramps in the epigastrium,
- drowsiness and thirst
- constipation or diarrhea.
When a patient suffers from kidney failure and consumes high doses of a suspension, this can lead to negative phenomena that differ significantly from the rest of the consequences. These include:
- the appearance of edema,
- an increase in the concentration of magnesium and aluminum in the blood, and calcium in the urine,
- pressure drop
- dementia and encephalopathy.
Possibility of overdose
Long-term therapy in large doses of Almagel Neo may differ from treatment with other types of the drug in the occurrence of an overdose. The main symptoms are: increased fatigue and nervousness, changeable mood, slowed breathing, numbness and muscle pain, inadequate reaction to events, facial flushing (redness). To eliminate such negative signs, you need to cleanse the body from an excess of medicine.
Such measures as gastric lavage, stimulation of vomiting, laxatives and sorbents are given.
Tablets and syrups belong to the group of antacids. The basis of all varieties of liquid form is a suspension of aluminum and magnesium hydroxides. The composition of the tablet preparation includes magaldrate.
The action of any kind is aimed at the symptoms of dyspepsia:
- sour burp
- epigastric pain
- excessive gas formation,
In addition, drugs have a beneficial effect on the condition of the mucous membrane of the esophagus and stomach:
- cover the walls with a protective film,
- reduce the enzymatic activity of gastric juice,
- neutralize excess hydrochloric acid,
- reduce the inflammatory response,
- accelerate the healing of erosive and ulcerative lesions,
- minimize the risk of developing gastropathy after taking aggressive medications, such as analgesics, as well as hormones and food.
All forms are used to treat pathologies of the digestive system, accompanied by normal or increased acidity of the gastric juice:
- acute and chronic gastritis,
- reflux disease
- erosion and ulcers,
- dyspeptic symptoms due to a violation of the rules of a healthy diet or taking medication,
- hiatal hernia
- intestinal inflammation (colitis, enterocolitis),
The suspension protects the gastric mucosa from an aggressive internal environment - hydrochloric acid and enzymes
It is also possible to use syrup and tablets for prophylactic purposes together with drugs that irritate the mucous membranes.
Common contraindications for all varieties are:
- individual hypersensitivity to the components,
- kidney disease, accompanied by severe violations of their function,
Depending on changes in the composition, drugs have additional restrictions on the use.
We recommend that you read the information on how to take Almagel correctly.
Types of Almagel
There are 3 types of suspensions:
- No additives (in green packaging).
- With a carminative component (in an orange bundle with the additional word Neo).
- With anesthetic (in a yellow box with the addition of the letter A at the end of the name).
Additionally produced in tablets, in this case the letter T is assigned to the name.
Dosage and dosage regimen
Before use, the bottle must be shaken well to achieve homogeneity of the substance. Drugs should be drunk 20-30 minutes before meals and at night before bedtime.
If other drugs are prescribed in parallel, then between doses of Almagel and other drugs, a time interval of 1-2 hours should be maintained, since antacid can interfere with the absorption of active substances.
A single dose is determined by the attending physician. It is from 1 to 3 measured spoons, i.e. 5-15 ml. Multiplicity of admission is 3-4 times a day. The suspension is intended mainly for the course of treatment. The duration of each course is from 2 to 3 months. After relief of acute symptoms, they switch to maintenance doses - 5 ml 3 times a day.
Permissible daily dose - 80 ml. When treatment with higher doses is required, the total duration of the course is no more than 14 days.
Children under 10 years old are given a third of the "adult" dose (that is, no more than 5 ml), and adolescents from 10 to 15 years old are given half.
Almagel NEO take 1 sachet or 2 scoops (10 ml) 1 hour after a meal. The duration of the course is a maximum of 1 month.
With long-term treatment, it is recommended to make adjustments to the diet to compensate for phosphorus deficiency.
If drugs are taken for a long time and in doses exceeding therapeutic, an overdose is not excluded. Its symptoms are muscle weakness, fatigue, myalgia, facial congestion, cognitive impairment, sharp emotional changes, unmotivated nervousness and the appearance of an unpleasant taste in the mouth. In severe situations, respiratory failure is possible. In such cases, the victim is washed the stomach, give laxatives and enterosorbents.
We understand the types of Almagel
The drug has been known for quite some time for almost everyone who has encountered problems from the stomach and intestines. The packaging is green, the medicine itself is a white suspension of a sweetish taste with lemon aroma. For a long time, Almagel was almost the only prescribed antacid for gastritis, duodenitis, peptic ulcer and other gastrointestinal diseases.
Over time, the lineup replenished with drugs of a slightly different composition, which have various additional properties. The trademark of all drugs in the line belongs to the international pharmaceutical holding Actavis, countries of manufacture may vary. The following varieties of Almagel are available on the Russian pharmaceutical market:
- The previously mentioned “simple” Almagel. Suspension of white color with a sweet taste and aroma of lemon. The drug, presented on the Russian market, is produced in Russia. Available in dark glass bottles with a volume of 170 ml. Packed in a green cardboard box, to which is attached a 5 ml measuring spoon. "Normal" 170 ml
- Almagel A is also a suspension, in taste and smell it resembles an ordinary one, it differs in composition (it includes Anestezin). It is made by the Bulgarian company Balkanpharma-Troyan. It is also available in dark glass bottles of 170 ml. Packed in a yellow cardboard box with a measuring spoon. "A" 170 ml
- Almagel NEO. This medicine has an updated composition that improves its tolerance. It is also a suspension of sweet taste and white. The aroma is orange. It is also produced in Bulgaria. Available in two dosage forms: a 170 ml dark glass bottle in a box with a measuring spoon and a 10 ml disposable sachet in a pack of 10 pieces. Packing color is orange.
The variety of forms of this medicine is dictated by the existence of various clinical situations in which it is prescribed. Each of the drugs has its own niche, where its use is most justified.
On the Internet there is information about the tablet form of Almagel and that all types of the drug are available in sachets. They are registered and allowed for sale in other countries (in Ukraine, Kazakhstan), since they are produced by an international holding. In Russia, they do not have registration yet.
Difference in compositions
Features of the use of Almagels are related to their composition. Despite the fact that they all belong to the same group, the indications and contraindications for their reception are somewhat different. This is due to the difference in the ratio of magnesium and aluminum hydroxides in their composition, as well as the presence of additional components. The table shows the comparative composition of a single dose (5 ml) of Almagel and its varieties.
Almagel Neo contains ethanol, therefore, it should not be prescribed to people suffering from epilepsy, chronic alcoholism or liver diseases, as well as those who have suffered head injuries. For the same reason, it is contraindicated in patients under 10 years of age, pregnant and lactating women. This suspension contains sorbitol, which is contraindicated in people with genetically determined fructose intolerance.
